Artist Statement
Exploring Creativity Through Diversity
My work examines the complexity of identity, weaving together themes of ancestry, autonomy, representation, and faith. Using mixed media, collage, and textured surfaces, I construct visual narratives that reclaim identity, honor resilience, and challenge the ways Black bodies and voices have been perceived, silenced, and celebrated across generations.
Rooted in personal and collective memory, my work unfolds as a tapestry of history, self-expression, and resistance. I begin with my own lineage, using maps, symbols, and archival references to trace the stories of those who came before me. Through layered compositions, I explore the tensions between control and autonomy, beauty and scrutiny, visibility and erasure. I offer space for people to be seen, to be heard, to exist beyond imposed narratives. Faith is constant in my work as a personal anchor and as a communal foundation that has shaped generations.
It is a visual conversation—demanding attention, creating space for reflection, and encouraging connection. By layering history with personal experience, I challenge the viewer to listen, to engage, and to see identity in all its depth—its joy, its pain, its beauty, and its struggle. In doing so, I hope to illuminate the resilience of Black identity and its ongoing evolution, ensuring these stories are recognized, remembered, and understood.
